James Stewart

Whistler, British Columbia

James Stewart apprenticed in the film industry, working in computer graphics at studios including DreamWorks Animation on films such as Shrek 2, The Chronicles of Narnia film series, and the Harry Potter film series before committing to full-time sculpture. Twenty years later he is recognized for expressive figurative work and a parallel exploration of modernist abstraction.

Through travel and field research—earning membership in The Explorers Club—Stewart seeks to capture the essential character and presence of his subjects. His foundation as a figurative sculptor allows him to convey emotion, gesture, and psychological presence in both realism and abstraction. The Drift series embodies this pursuit, distilling years of craft into sculptural expressions of life’s forces. His work is cast in bronze in San Francisco and exhibited internationally.
